    Note The Northwoods Children's Museum offers a family adventure of discovery with changing exhibits, daily events, and drop-in activities. The pass admits 6 people to the museum. The Pass may only be checked out by an adult holding a valid Northern Waters library card (fines less than $10.00). Pass may be checked out for a 3 day loan (pickup after 3 pm day before, usage day, return by 11 am following day). Friday pickups are returned on Monday. NON-RENEWABLE. Late fee is $10.00 per day. Pickup time is anytime after 11am; return time is anytime before 11am. To reserve a pass, call the Library: 715.479.8070. For Museum information call: 715.479.4623. Museum hours of operation are: Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm; Sunday Noon - 5pm. The Northwoods Children's Museum is located at 346 W Division St Eagle River, WI 54521.

    The Walter E. Olson Memorial Library in cooperation with The League of Women Voters of the Northwoods is providing patrons with the Voter Education and Registration Assistance Project (VERAP) which will provide on-line or paper registration assistance to anyone who needs to register or re-register to vote. A table, computer, guidebook and paper forms are setup in the library technology area for local residents to use when completing the voter registration process. If you have had a name or address change since the Spring Election in April, you will need to re-register. Doing it now with our help will save you standing in line to do paper registration at your municipality hall on November 6 for the Fall Election. Beginning on September 7th and continuing through October 2018, come to the Library. Bring your Wisconsin Driver’s License or Wisconsin State ID card along with you. You will need to enter that number and expiration date. If you have moved and that address is not up-to-date with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, we can help you go online to make the address change without any charge. You will also need to have the last four digits of your Social Security number for this process to be completed electronically. If you do not have a Wisconsin driver’s license or ID card, you can still register electronically by using the last four digits of your Social Security # instead along with a Proof of Residence document like your utility bill if it has your current street address. We are eager to assist you in using MyVote Wisconsin, https://myvote.wi.gov, the official source for voting information in Wisconsin provided by the Wisconsin Elections Commission so that you can complete everything in this one step. With the General Election on November 8 many state and county offices will be on the ballot and you will want to be prepared to vote. In addition, VERAP assistance at Olson Memorial Library will be available all year long.     Temporary local jobs are available for the 2020 Census. Applicants can apply online at 2020census.gov/jobs. After candidates apply and are accepted by the U.S. Census they will be notified about the onboarding process held in the library in early November. Additional U.S. Census Bureau trainings may also be held in the library in the future.

    For the month of October at Olson Library, we have a Snap Circuit Project table available. Each week another project will be displayed in the hall of the Adult area for use by adults, young adults or by kids with their parents. The Snap Circuit kits help teach concepts of electronics and circuit building without needing to solder wires. Try one of our Snap Circuit projects with your kids or by yourself. We also have several kits which can be checked out for a three-week period so you can work on the many projects found in each kit.

    Join us at the Olson Memorial Library for the fourth event in our first Artist in Residence Series! Our Artist In Residency theme is, "Repurpose and Upcycle". Come to the library for a free altered books workshop. An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning. We will be using remainders from our discarded books to "repurpose and upcycle" them with a variety of techniques. This workshop is lead by Debbie Ketchum-Jircik, our 2018 Artist In Residence.     On October 18th, the High Plains Library District will be hosting an In-flight Education Downlink from the International Space Station with NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor. This 20-minute live event (targeting youth in grades 3-5) will be streamed live nationally by NASA from the Riverside Library and Cultural Center in Evans, Colorado. STAR Net libraries are encouraged to host their own event by tuning in to NASA TV's Media Channel or the agency's website. The downlink event is currently scheduled for 11:40am-12:00pm MT.(12:40 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Central Time) We invite all interested persons to come and listen to the interview. See inside the Space Station and learn some neat stuff about it and the astronauts there.

Tell the people at the circulation desk when you complete your work. We will take photos and display on the tri-fold boards. How creative can you get? Name your creation and tell a story about it.

    Join us at the Olson Memorial Library for the next installment of the 2018 Eagle River Historical Society History Series! On October 25th, at 10 a.m., Craig Moore, the Society Historian, will offer a photo presentation. His topic this month is the Greenwood Ranch Resort; the story of a family resort run by three generations of Powell's until the death of Jane Powell in 2015. Greenwood Ranch Resort was located on land previously homesteaded by P. J. Gaffney in 1900. It was purchased by Dr. John R. Powell in 1913 for a rest home and became a resort soon after. The Eagle River Historical Society and the Olson Memorial Library are pleased to continue a joint collaboration of their popular local history series this fall. The program is free.
